Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica may not be a term you hear a lot, but it is an incredibly common condition. It is believed that at least one in ten American adults is impacted by sciatica at some point in their life. Unfortunately, because you do not often hear the term, many do not even know they have it. The following is a look at what sciatica is and how your Peckville chiropractor can help.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a medical condition in which the sciatica nerve pathway is impacted or otherwise interrupted. For example, a common underlying cause of sciatica is a herniated disk or spinal bone spur that disrupts the sciatica nerve path along the spine, compressing it so that it cannot function normally. The result of this is a shooting pain that typically starts in the lower back and travels down through the hip, buttock, and finally down the back of one's leg.

When sciatica first develops, the pain may only be at the hip but over time it extends all the way down the leg. Almost always, sciatica will affect only one side of the body. In addition to pain, a person with sciatica may experience numbness, inflammation, and stiffness in the impacted leg.

Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica

Experienced and targeted chiropractic treatments have been proven to be highly effective at providing pain relief and expediting healing. Furthermore, these treatments are non-invasive and do not require the use of potentially addictive medications or medications that may cause undesired side effects. A few examples of the types of treatments your Peckville chiropractor might recommend to treat sciatica include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments. Also commonly referred to as spinal manipulation, these adjustments use targeted force to realign the spine. This can remove the cause of your sciatica and reduce the pain that comes with nerve inflammation.
  • Ice or cold therapy. The specialized application of cold therapy can likewise control and reduce inflammation and pain. Cold therapy works by decreasing the conduction of your skin's nerves and decreasing inflammation. However, while cold therapy is ideal for immediate relieving of symptoms, it is not effective at stimulating long-term healing and relief.
  • Ultrasound therapy. This unique therapy utilizes sound waves to penetrate your body's deep tissues. Via ultrasound therapy, your chiropractor can stimulate your body back into providing normal circulation with the results of reducing swelling, stiffness, cramping, muscle spasms, and other pain and discomfort that is being caused by your sciatica.
