Text Neck

Tech Neck Treatment

Tech neck occurs when the neck is held in a stressful position for long periods. This happens most often when people spend hours each day looking down at their phones, tablets, or other digital devices. Holding the head in these unnatural positions for so long leads to neck pain, shoulder pain, soreness, stiffness, headaches, and more. Over time, it can also lead to long-term spinal issues. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with tech neck for the rest of your life. There are ways to both prevent it and ways to treat it if you already suffer from it.

Preventing Tech Neck

Preventing tech neck can happen in just a few steps:

Change Your Workspace

Tech neck is not just caused by looking down at your phone or tablet. It can also occur as a result of working at a computer. Your screen should be within your regular vision. You should not have to look down to view it.

Additionally, don’t sit straight up. Doing so forces the neck to tighten to hold its position. Your chair should recline some- around 25 degrees or so. And your head should be in such a position that if you were to fall asleep, it would fall backward – not forward.

Take Breaks

Whether looking at your computer or your digital device, take a break from the screen about every half hour. Look around and do some stretches for 30 seconds to a minute. Take a longer break every hour or so to get up and move. Not only will this help prevent tech neck, but it can also prevent eye problems due to computer vision.

Exercises

One reason tech neck happens is that the back and neck have to overcompensate to hold the head up. Do some neck and back exercises to help strengthen those muscles and straighten your posture.
